Hugh Hefner: Gay.

After doing some research (read: thinking about it), I’ve determined that Hugh Hefner, creator of Playboy magazine, is gay.  I realize this is a bold statement, but I am prepared to back up this statement with some pretty compelling evidence.  You be the judge.

Article #1: Hugh is always wearing silk pajamas, and enjoys eating ice cream while watching movies in bed.  If you replaces “Hugh” with “Pamela”, I wouldn’t think anything of it.  The fact is no self-respecting guy is going to admit (much less brag about it) to that, regardless of wealth or status.  “What are you up to tonight Brian, want to grab a beer?  No sorry dude I’m going home to toss my silk pj’s on and watch reruns of ‘Casablanca’ while dominating some ‘Chunky Monkey’”.  Not happening.

Article #2: Hugh always hangs out with old, equally creepy men. Even at Hugh’s big parties, you’ll see a half dozen old men also in there silk pj’s.  This itself isn’t weird, but that they are surrounded by blond bombshells and not even looking at them is.  “Hey Larry, why do these girls keeps pestering us, I just want to talk about stocks and stuff!”

Article #3: Hugh has a whole room. For his shoes. No comment.

Article #4: Hugh’s “girlfriends” are never jealous of each other. As we all know, women can get jealous.  Really jealous.  And that’s only when they’re with one guy in a monogamous relationship.  I CANNOT imagine the fights 3 to 7 petty, materialistic women all sharing the same 81 year old man would have.  But they all seem happy, blank, and content.  They aren’t jealous because their is nothing to be jealous about.

Article #5: Playboy is a gay man’s interpretation of a straight man’s fantasy. By no means am I saying the women aren’t beautiful.  They are.  But they’re all the same.  And they’re all modeled after a certain doll every 6 year-old girl owned.  I’ll give you a hint, it starts with a “B” and ends with an “arbie”.

Superbad: Instant Classic

I haven’t laughed that hard or been that sold on a movie since “Anchorman”. Which is one of my favorites. Superbad perfectly balances it’s comedy: young awkward humor with adult storyline and well thought out plot. The actors were all cast perfectly for their roles, as far as I know that’s how each of them are in real life. The jokes are fresh and unassuming, giving a new take on the classic themes of high school, alcohol, and sex.

Go see this film. You’ll like it.

This is a clip of Jonah Hill losing it on an asshole reporter during an interview…

Malcolm Gladwell: Blink + Tipping Point

I have read both “The Tipping Point” and “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell, and thoroughly enjoyed both books.  Both of the books are very well written, and cover interesting topics worth checking out.  “The Tipping Point” is about how trends start and take hold, here is an excerpt from the book:

Yawning is incredibly contagious. I made some of you reading this yawn simply by writing the word “yawn”. The people who yawned when they saw you yawn, meanwhile, were infected by the sight of you yawning–which is a second kind of contagion. They might even have yawned if they only heard you yawn, because yawning is also aurally contagious: if you play an audio-tape of a yawn to blind people, they’ll yawn too. And finally, if you yawned as you read this, did the thought cross your mind–however unconsciously and fleetingly–that you might be tired? I suspect that for some of you it did, which means that yawns can also be emotionally contagious. Simply by writing the word, I can plant a feeling in your mind. Can the flu virus do that? Contagiousness, in other words, is an unexpected property of all kinds of things, and we have to remember that if we are to recognize and diagnose epidemic change.

-The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell.

Blink deals more with the psychology of split second decisions and why we make them.  I don’t think I could pick a favorite between the two, they both are great in their own way!

Malcolm Gladwell also occasionally writes for “The New Yorker”, all of his writing is very readable and easy to understand.

Beerfest

beerfest!

I saw “Beerfest” the other night, and scoffed at the warning before the movie began. It included phrases like “if you drink this much, you will die”, “we are not responsible” and “do not attempt this at home”. After watching the film, I understood why the warning was included. This movie makes you want to DRINK!

This is one of those movies you can watch over and over without getting bored of it. It became an instant classic for me, a quarter of the way through the film I had already decided to buy it. I would highly suggest watching.

For your entertainment, here are some crazy beirut (aka beer-pong) trick shots that wouldn’t have been out of place in “Beerfest”.

Peninsula Pink

Peninsula Rose Garden is just down the street from Tyler and my apartment.  It has been a favorite date spot of mine, and also a great place to go at dusk and reflect/relax.  Right now the roses are in full bloom, and walking through the garden is like walking through a dream.  This place is a shiny penny among tarnish too, the neighborhood surrounding the park is seedy but the park itself is clean + safe.  If you live in the Portland area or are visiting I suggest stopping.

Here is a map of the Peninsula Rose Garden’s location.
