Oscar Wilde Quote

One’s real life is often the life that one does not lead.

Think about this one too much and you may get a nose bleed.

Wilde had such a unique sensibility and style about him.  Truly a contradiction of terms.

My thoughts on this quote: We can plan for ages what we want out of life, where we’re going, our goals, motivations, etc.   But truly the only thing we can control is our own reaction to what happens to us in life.  With so many things outside of our control, our actions/behaviors are the only things we have power over (most of the time).

So I agree, I’m not “leading” my life all the time, but I am leading my reaction to life. It is only through my ability to respond to outside forces that I can truly be happy inside myself.

“It is the fate of the old to worry about the young, and the fate of the young to scorn the worry of the old.”

How true.

Spinoza Quotes

Baruch Spinoza was a 17th century Dutch philosopher that directly affects our lives today. Notably because it was his idea for a government to separate church and state. I have been reading a lot of his work lately, mostly dealing with his beliefs on ethics. It has been some of the most challenging but fruitful reading I have done.

If you want the present to be different from the past, study the past.

All happiness or unhappiness solely depends upon the quality of the object to which we are attached by love

Desire is the very essence of man

There is no hope unmingled with fear, and no fear unmingled with hope.

18 is the new 22.

What a line. Especially when you are referring to a girl’s age. A friend of mine that lives in California told me this while trying to justify dating girls that are 17 and 18. This wouldn’t be a big deal if he wasn’t a decade older than them, making the term “barely legal” more appropriate than I’d like.

A humorous anecdote about the friend the explained this new theory to-

One evening we were out at Betty Ford here in Portland, and unbeknownst to me my friend was already plowed before we arrived.  Upon slugging two vodkas, he decided it was socially acceptable to start slapping girls at the bar.  I realized what he was doing after the third shocked/upset looking girl walked away from him.  Well done, john-boy.
