MySpace/MTV to hold presidential chats

Instant-messaging has finally gotten the respect it doesn’t deserve. Starting September 28, MTV and MySpace are hosting internet “conversations” between 2008 presidential hopefuls and social network users. These won’t be raw- a moderator will still be present to chose the questions to be answered. So my question is: why bother? If you are still going to filter this “conversation” to the same degree as a normal town hall this seems like a moot discussion. The answer (of course) is image. These candidates want to appear to be as web savvy as possible to a generation of predominate non-voters. The problem: anyone who gives two shits about the elections will not be found in a MySpace forum about the elections. I can just picture that:

I mean, OMG did you see what Obama had to say about the state of foreign policy brought about by the current administration? I was totally LMAO when I saw it. Okay, TTYL!

It’s still more than a year until elections and I already have a bad taste in my mouth. My prediction is that Hilary kills Barack after he wins the New Hampshire primary, she goes to prison still sporting her grimacing “smile”, and Edwards pees himself with fear of being elected. At least he can command someone to keep his hair pretty.

190,000 weapons missing in Iraq

What? Our government LOST 190,000 guns? In Iraq? Aren’t those expensive?  Yes, yes they are.  That is $19,000,000,000 worth of weapons.  And we wonder where all these terrorists and insurgents get their weapons… This is over half of all the small arms given to Iraqi soldiers.  Read the entire article here.

Apparently incompetence is the American government’s greatest skill.

$90,000 in Jefferson’s freezer- STILL re-elected!

Congressman William Jefferson was found with $90,000 in his freezer, nearly two years ago. Since then, HE WAS RE-ELECTED. What? How in the pope’s name did this guy receive bribes, get caught red handed (or cold handed) and still run for office and win. That is telling of how little people know or care about politics. The people that elected him deserve to have them as a representative. I feel bad for the poor schmuck that ran against Jefferson, and lost to a criminal. I hope that guy never runs for office again, a drunk nine year old would probably eat his lunch in debate.

Interesting News: Judge Orders Church Audit

A federal bankruptcy judge ordered that the Archdiocese of San Diego be externally audited.  This comes amid accusations that the church is trying to hide + transfer assests in order to avoid additional settlement payments.

This is HUGE, because it shows the federal government is attempting to control + regulate the church- which goes against the constitutional seperation of church and state.  I’ll write an essay about the implications on strikeyourcolors, in the mean time check out the article!

American Elections + Politics 2006

I am so sick and tired of elections. Of politics. It seems like the only way to view things anymore is red and blue, or not at all. It frightens me to think that the alternative to having an extreme viewpoint is simply not to have one. Our party affiliations have become so extreme it is impossible to have an opinion that combines the two. Impossible in the sense that nothing will be accomplished if you vote outside of party lines, you waste a vote. This country’s politicking needs to digress towards the early and mid twentieth century. Those were times when the country was united by a single belief system, a cause. Specifically, I am referring to JFK’s unification of the young people of this country. He didn’t threaten us with terrorism, high taxes, extended war, or a one party government. He didn’t need to. He romanced the country into a different mindset. Kennedy’s ability was to show people the vision of what the country could become. He gave them an ideal, and proposed hard work and dedication to get there. Elections have become so issue and character-centric we’ve forgotten we all are ultimately of one party: Americans. We need to move back towards the middle, towards a country that works together and compromises to deal with its problems, not finger point or war-monger. Unless this happens on a large scale in 2008, the country could succumb to the cliché “slippery slope it is precariously balanced on. We would fall irreparably into an ‘us versus them’ mentality that would lead to a complete break-down of the system of government we have instated. Having to claw for every inch of ground from the opposing polar bi-partisanship would halt progress in this country. I feel like we’re reverting back to the Civil War days, when brothers fought and killed each other over a cause. We have the same mentality today, just a different cause, and not nearly as deserving.
